Using FileRun

The trash🔗

When you delete a file or a folder, it is not removed from the server straight away. It is moved to the Trash, where it stays until you restore it or delete it for good.

Your trash is your own. It is stored inside your home folder, in a hidden folder named .filerun.trash, and only you can see what is in it.

Note

The trash counts against your storage quota. A deleted file keeps taking up space until it leaves the trash. If you are running out of space, emptying the trash frees it.

Deleting an item🔗

Select one or more items and do one of the following:

• right-click them and choose Move to trash
• press the Delete key
• drag them onto Trash in the panel on the left

A window asks you to confirm. It always appears when a folder is among the selected items.

If your account is allowed to delete permanently, the window also offers a checkbox called Permanent deletion. Ticking it skips the trash and removes the items immediately, and the button changes from Move to trash to Delete forever. Pressing Shift + Delete opens the same window with the checkbox already ticked.

Looking at what you deleted🔗

Open Trash in the panel on the left. Two extra columns are shown here:

• Date deleted — when the item was moved to the trash
• Deleted from — the folder it was deleted from

The Details panel shows the same two values for the selected item.

Items in the trash cannot be renamed, moved, starred or added to a collection. Restore them first.

Restoring an item🔗

Select it and choose Restore, either from the toolbar or from the right-click menu. The item goes back to the folder it was deleted from.

Note

If that folder no longer exists, the item is restored to the root of your My files folder instead. FileRun does not recreate the folder structure it was deleted from.

Restoring brings back the file's previous versions along with the file. It does not bring back:

• the star, if the item was starred
• its membership in any collection
• any web link that had been created for it

Those are removed the moment an item goes to the trash, and creating them again is up to you.

Removing an item for good🔗

• To remove one item, select it in the trash and choose Delete forever.
• To remove everything, open Trash and click Empty trash. FileRun asks you to confirm, warning that all files and folders in your trash are about to be permanently deleted.

Both require the permission User can delete files and folders permanently. Without it, you can still move items to the trash, but not remove them from it.

There is no undo. A file removed from the trash is gone from the server, together with its previous versions.

Deleting inside a folder somebody shared with you🔗

The trash always belongs to the owner of the file, not to the person who pressed delete.

When you delete something inside a folder that another user shared with you, the item goes to that user's trash, not to yours. You will not find it in your own Trash section, and you cannot restore it. Ask the owner of the folder to restore it.

The same applies the other way around: if you shared a folder and somebody deletes a file in it, the file lands in your trash and you are the one who can bring it back.

Is the trash emptied automatically?🔗

Not by default. Items stay in the trash until somebody removes them.

Your administrator can schedule the empty_trash.php command to purge items older than a chosen number of days — see Command line tools. Ask your administrator whether such a rule is in place, and after how many days deleted files disappear on your installation.

When the trash is not available🔗

The Trash section is missing when:

• your account does not have the permission User can delete files. That permission is what the trash is built on, so without it there is no trash section at all; or
• your account has no home folder.
