Besides folders, FileRun gives you five ways to mark files and folders so that you can find them again: stars, tags, quick tags, ratings and folder colours.
None of them moves the file. They are all information attached to the item, and they follow it when it is renamed or moved to another folder.
One difference matters when you work with other people:
Starring marks an item so that you can reach it quickly from one place, wherever it is stored.
Organize → Add to... → Starred....
You can also drag them onto Starred in the panel on the left.Organize → Remove star.Everything you starred is listed under Starred in the panel on the left, most recently starred
first. A small star is drawn on starred rows in the file list.
Your home folder itself cannot be starred, and neither can files opened through a shared link. Moving an item to the trash removes its star.
A tag is a short word or phrase attached to a file or a folder. An item can carry any number of tags, and a tag can be used on any number of items.
Details tab of the panel on the right.Add tag... box and press Enter. While you type, FileRun suggests tags that are already in use. To add several tags at once,
separate them with a comma or a semicolon before pressing Enter.
You can also drag a tag from the Details panel onto another file or folder, in the file list or in
the folder tree, to apply the same tag to it.
Click a tag to open its menu:
Search by — searches your files for that tag.Change color — picks the colour the tag is drawn in.Copy — copies the tag text to the clipboard.Apply to all — applies the tag to everything you have selected. Shown only when you selected
more than one item.Remove — removes the tag from this item. The panel's own menu, behind the button at its top right, offers Copy all, Remove all and
More info.
If you do not choose a colour, FileRun picks one for you. A tag whose text is the name of a colour,
such as red, is drawn in that colour. Any other tag gets a colour derived from its text, so the
same word always looks the same wherever it appears.
Tags are shown next to the file name. Your administrator decides how many are shown before the rest
are folded into a +N marker, under Files → Settings → File list in the control panel.
Tags beyond a certain number are drawn as a small tag icon, with the text in a tooltip.
Open the search panel, switch on Metadata, choose Tags as the field and type the tag. The
Search by entry of the tag menu does exactly this in one click. See
Searching files and folders.
The media libraries can also list files by tag — see The media libraries.
A quick tag is an ordinary tag that FileRun offers in the right-click menu, so that you can apply it without typing. Quick tags behave as a single choice: an item carries at most one of them.
Organize → Quick tag, then pick one from the
list. Any quick tag the item already carried is replaced.Remove quick tag, at the bottom of the same list, clears whichever quick tag is set.Apart from that, a quick tag is a normal tag: it appears in the Details panel and it is searched
in the same way.
Out of the box the quick tags are approved, pending and rejected. They are not configured in
the control panel — your administrator sets them in FileRun's configuration file, with
$config['app']['quick_tags'].
A rating is a number from 1 to 5 that you give a file or a folder.
Details tab of the panel on the right.Rating section.Clicking the number that is already set clears the rating. You can rate several selected items at
once, and you can add a Rating column to the file list through Options → Choose details.
Ratings can be searched in the same way as tags, by choosing Rating as the metadata field in the
search panel.
The feature can be turned off by the administrator, under Files → Settings → Features,
with the checkbox File rating.
A colour makes a folder easier to pick out in a long list.
Organize → Change color.Default puts the folder back to the normal colour.
Only folders can be coloured. Choosing the colour of a file is not possible, and your home folder cannot be coloured either.
The feature can be turned off by the administrator, under Files → Settings → Features,
with the checkbox Folder colors.
